The Teaching Computation with MATLAB workshops always pick up on the newest trends in STEM teaching -- from flipped classrooms, to cloud tools, to computational notebooks to online grading. The 2024 workshop will allow educators to share experiences and learn about those trends but will add accounts of MATLAB based courses that incorporate Generative AI, or ChatGPT. MathWorks staff and fellow educators will be on hand to help you turn the stories into practical classroom approaches.

The workshop will take place in-person at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota.

The workshop will be a mix of training sessions introducing teaching tools and brief talks by peers, with approximately half the workshop allocated to group breakouts, including dedicated work-time to develop and evolve your course curriculum. Conveners will develop the workshop program and working group make-up based on applicant interests and teaching focuses.

Workshop Goals

At the workshop, educators will

  • Explore methodologies for teaching computation effectively, in engineering- and science-focused courses, as well as dedicated programming courses
  • Create, share and publish teaching activities (aka course modules)
  • Learn MATLAB teaching tools: Incorporate new tools -- such as MATLAB Live Scripts, MATLAB Online, MATLAB AI Chat Playground (experimental), and MATLAB Onramp -- to improve student learning and course effectiveness.
  • Join a community of educators teaching computation and publishing shareable, reusable curriculum

This workshop is a collaboration between MathWorks and the Science Education Resource Center (SERC) at Carleton College.

Dates and Times: October 27-29, 2024

The workshop will start at 5:00pm on Sunday, October 27th, 2024. Participants should plan to arrive in Northfield by 3:00pm on Sunday. The workshop will end Tuesday, October 29th at 2:00 pm. Participants should plan return travel for no earlier than 4:30 pm that day.

Participant Contributions

By applying to the workshop, participants agree to the following, if accepted:

  • Submit a written activity involving teaching computation using MATLAB. These activities will be reviewed by the educator review team and feedback shared with authors prior to the workshop. A template will be provided. The submission deadline will be in early-mid September. (Exact date TBD)
  • Participate fully in the workshop and attend all workshop sessions. Many participants will be invited to deliver presentations on their teaching experiences or to serve as working group leaders at the workshop.
  • Review and follow the Code of Professional Conduct for SERC Events.

Applying to the Workshop

Applicants for this workshop must teach at a college or university and have experience using (or plans to use) MATLAB for teaching. In addition to applying to the workshop, if you wish to apply for a stipend, fill out the separate form.

The workshop application deadline has passed.

Venue

The workshop will be held at Carleton College located in Northfield, Minnesota, a short walk from the hotels. SERC Staff will be in touch about accessibility needs.

Costs

MathWorks will cover the cost of hosting the workshop. Participants are responsible for covering local lodging and travel to and from Minneapolis. A shuttle to and from Minneapolis-Saint Paul airport (MSP) will be available to transport participants at workshop start and end.

Stipends are available to help participants with the costs of travel and lodging. To apply for a travel stipend, complete both the stipend and workshop applications.
