ADVANCEing FieldSafety

ADVANCEing FieldSafety is a program that aims to provide field research teams with the tools to promote safe and inclusive environments, identify unsafe and harmful behaviors, respond appropriately to mitigate these behaviors, support those impacted by the behaviors, and proactively plan to reduce the likelihood and impact of these behaviors in the future.

ADVANCEGeo is collaborating with the FieldSafe team at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado at Boulder and researchers in Aotearoa/New Zealand's National Institute for Water and Atmosphere (Taihoro Nukurangi/NIWA) and ETH Zurich to develop and test the effectiveness of a massive online open course consisting of a series of self-paced, asynchronously delivered modules that cover topics such as risk assessment, allyship training and bystander intervention. These modules will be accompanied by synchronous debrief and reflection sessions led by facilitators. The team is also developing a toolkit consisting of sample field policies, codes of conduct and incident reporting plans. ADVANCEing FieldSafety addresses a new requirement by the U.S. National Science Foundation that projects proposing to conduct research off-site must include plans to address harassment and unwelcome conduct.
