About the ACM FaCE Project

Throughout Phase II of the ACM Faculty Career Enhancement (FaCE) Project, ACM has sought to foster and enhance the rich collaboration within the ACM, and by doing so, foster collaboration more broadly within higher education by disseminating models and practices discerned through careful evaluation.

From 2008-2011, FaCE Project invited competitive proposals from faculty at ACM colleges and awarded over $400,000 to fund more than 50 collaborative faculty workshops and conferences, research collaborations, and presentations at national professional conferences. FaCE has also supported the development of internet-based outreach tools, pedagogical resources, and evaluation activities.

This project has sought to build on the comparative advantages liberal arts colleges have in developing successful models of pedagogical and scholarly collaboration that can transfer to other institutions, both large and small, by promoting three key themes:
  • Collaboration
  • Sustainability
  • Outcomes and Impact
Since its inception in 2004, the FaCE Project has been supported by generous funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. FaCE Phase II followed the first, four-year phase of the project, which focused on the changing needs of faculty at different stages of their careers.

FaCE Project Types

  • Collaborative Research: These grants supported several types of projects, including faculty/student research collaborations and cross-disciplinary and cross-college faculty collaborations; collaborations that facilitated innovative on- or off-campus programs with a multi-cultural or international focus; and collaborations addressing the scholarship of teaching and learning.
  • Collaborative Events:These grants supported collaboration by gathering faculty to discuss substantive research projects; to explore approaches to advising, pedagogy, uses of technology, and assessment; and to increase internationalization by sharing ideas and exploring means across campuses.
  • Presentation Grants funded previous grant recipients to present on their FaCE-funded work at national meetings and conferences, thus disseminating the outcomes of these projects within the broader higher education community.

FaCE and SERC

ACM is collaborating with SERC at Carleton College to provide tools and expertise for developing a website for each FaCE-funded project that will be comprehensive and searchable.Through SERC, the collaborations fostered by the FaCE Project will be widely available and will have impact beyond the participants and the ACM.

Information for Organizers of FaCE Project Collaborations

SERC has complete information on how to set up a website to support your collaborative event or research project and to make effective use of SERC's online tools. To get started, please read the Online Tools to Support Collaborations page.
